A few weeks ago, I saw something on Bassfan's Dock Talk section about how PETA sent a letter to the University of Alabama - Birmingham that requested that the school cancel the bass fishing team because it is a "violent bloodsport". I saw this and didn't think much of it, it seems like they are always trying to stop fisherman from enjoying their passion.
This morning, my buddy Tommy Edwards, president of the FGCU Bass Team sent me a link on Facebook about another instance of this happening. This time they are targeting the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga. Here is what they said: "Sanctioning the maiming and killing of fish for 'sport' sends the message that violence towards others is acceptable," said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "If people impaled dogs or cats in the mouth and dragged them into an environment in which the animals couldn't breathe, they would be charged with cruelty to animals." Sorry Tracy, bass are fish, not dogs or cats.
I don't think they have a chance to stop fisherman, but it still sends a bad message about bass fishing to the public.

I suppose when it comes right down to it there maybe is a bit of cruelty to animals when it comes to fishing. But the level of cruelty just isn't all that great IMO. Fish are tough animals that live all their lives in a cruel environment. I think getting caught and released is significantly less cruel than being eaten by a bigger fish. Cleaning fish is no more cruel than getting eaten by a bigger fish.
I don't think there is any evidence that fish suffocation is as tramatic as suffocation for animals with lungs.
There are far worse things they could be trying to stop. Dog fighting, testing on animals, etc.
